Emporia Shops - A great way to take in the small town charm of Emporia is to visit the many unique shops. If antique hunting is a hobby of yours, stop over at one of the six antique shops; you might just find the perfect souvenir or a piece of Emporia heritage. Other worthwhile shops to see include Town Crier Bookstore where you'll find new releases as well as out-of-print books. Emporia Zoo has naturalized exhibits with a blend of native and exotic birds and animals presented in an area noted for extensive landscaping and horticultural features. If you haven't seen much wildlife, or just enjoy learning about animals up close and personal, the Emporia Zoo is guaranteed to provide an environment where you can view many exotic birds and animals, endangered species, and Kansas State animals. local2

Emporia Arts Center and Emporia Arts Council - An easy and fun way to throw a little culture into your visit is to visit the Emporia Arts Center. Spring and summer are the best times to visit. Current and future exhibits include student art, ceramics and glass exhibits, mixed media, and occasionally theatre performances. Annual events include the Chalk Fest, a street painting festival occurring on September 11th, and the Brown Bag Concerts in the public library courtyard every Wed. in July at noon. local3

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve - Twenty minutes from Emporia (west on Hwy. 50), the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve consists of nearly 11,000 acres of Tallgrass Prairie, which is home to nearly 400 species of plants, 150 kinds of birds, 39 kinds of reptiles and amphibians, and 31 mammal species. You'll also see a diverse variety of flora and fauna. During the summer months (May-Oct.), bus tours are available 3 times daily. There are also tours of the 1881 historic ranch house, limestone barn, and the one-room Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse. There are two hiking trails open year-round and special activities for children. Currently, there are no fees to enter the preserve.
